For those of you that get the chance to go moose hunting there are a few key things you need to know before you go. One of the main things you need to have at the very least is the ability to call a moose.
First let’s go over why this is important. In the fall moose begin to rut which means the males, known as Bulls, try and search out the female moose called cows in order to breed. The habitat and distance moose cover is so large that in order to make this search effective they call out to the other moose. Males make a certain type of call as do females. By calling and answering, they can track each other down over great distances.
For the hunter it is important to call during this time as they are imitating moose and hopefully intercept one on there search. In this video I go over the effective way to imitate a female moose calling out to attract a male.
Step One
The method to do this is to use your two index fingers and pinch both sides of your nose together with both fingers. This creates a nasal sound which is what you want.
Step Two
The next step is to hook your thumbs under your jaw which creates a perfect sort of funnel around your mouth. This allows the sound to reach out father. You must remember you are trying to imitate a 1000 plus pound animal. For extra volume you can couple this technique with a calling horn to really get your voice out there on windy days etc.

Step Three
Now that you have the basic hand position in place the next thing you need to know is how to imitate the sound. What you are trying to do is make the sound of “ERRRRRAHH” It is a long drawn out sound on the exhale breath. You want to put some extra push on the tail end as this gives you a lower note that resonates through the bush and echoes over water much better. The call should be a series of these bursts of as few as three and not more than 5. This seems to be the perfect amount to match the average cow moose calling. The longest of the calls should be about 5 seconds in length.
If you ever get the chance to hear a live moose in the wild calling you will find they don’t blast the call for great length.
So now that you have started matching the call you have to be able to use it effectively. This is where you need to mix up the lengths and durations a bit. You can also add inflection to it which really signals to the bulls. Another good point is that once you get to where you are going to hunt you not just grab your calling and belt out a call. Start very quietly and build with volume. You never know how close a moose is to you and if you do a super loud call right off the hop then run the risk of spooking that animal. That would be like you entering a room and yelling HEY! Everybody would turn and wonder why they are yelling. Start soft and work up.
I hope you can take this information and put it into effect on your next moose hunt. Remember like most things you will need to practice once you start to do this to get good and confident.
