Road Tripping Around Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula: Camping, Coastal Views, and Adventures at Sea
There’s something special about a road trip where the journey is just as memorable as the destination. Along Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, winding coastal highways, charming fishing villages, dramatic cliffs, and endless ocean views make every kilometre an adventure. Whether you’re pulling over to photograph a lighthouse, camping beneath the stars, or heading out onto the water to see one of Canada’s most iconic rock formations, the Gaspé Peninsula is a place that invites you to slow down and explore.
Our road trip was a perfect mix of outdoor adventure, unique experiences, and small-town charm, with unforgettable stops including camping at Les Perchoirs du Cirque, visiting a submarine, and taking a boat tour around Percé Rock.
Driving the Scenic Gaspé Peninsula
The best part of exploring the Gaspé Peninsula is that there’s no shortage of beautiful scenery along the way. The coastal road hugs the Gulf of St. Lawrence, offering sweeping ocean views, rocky shorelines, colourful houses, and little villages that seem to appear around every bend.
Rather than rushing from one destination to the next, we made time for spontaneous stops. Sometimes that meant pulling over to admire the coastline, while other times it meant wandering through a village or simply enjoying the fresh sea air while enjoying artisan shops. The region has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that makes it ideal for a road trip, especially if you love nature and travelling at your own pace.
One of the highlights of driving around the peninsula is watching the landscape change. Forests give way to open coastlines, cliffs rise dramatically above the water, and fishing boats dot the harbours. It’s the kind of drive where even the stretches between major attractions become part of the experience.
Camping at Les Perchoirs du Cirque
You can book hotels, Air BnB's and campgrounds all over but for a truly memorable overnight stop, camping at Les Perchoirs du Cirque was a highlight of our trip. The Gaspé Peninsula is full of opportunities to reconnect with nature, and staying somewhere surrounded by the region’s rugged beauty makes the experience even more special.
Camping adds a different rhythm to a road trip. Instead of checking into a hotel and heading straight back out, you can spend the evening enjoying the outdoors, preparing a meal, and settling in as the day winds down. There’s something incredibly satisfying about waking up in a beautiful setting, breathing in the fresh air, and knowing another day of exploring lies ahead.
Les Perchoirs du Cirque makes a memorable addition to a Gaspé itinerary for travellers looking to combine their coastal adventure with a night outdoors. They offer numerous different and very unique camping experiences unlike anything you've slept in before. It’s a reminder that some of the best travel memories aren’t necessarily made while ticking off attractions, but in the quieter moments between them. We stayed in the Ikar which is hanging pod overlooking the St. Lawrence. What a view.
Be sure to check seasonal availability and accommodation options before your visit, and bring layers for the cool coastal evenings. If timing works out make sure to get tickets to their on site circus show.

Discovering a Submarine
One of the more unexpected experiences on our road trip was visiting a submarine. The Gaspé Peninsula is known for its maritime history, so discovering an attraction that offers a closer look at life beneath the waves was a fascinating change of pace from the beaches and coastal viewpoints.
Exploring a submarine gives you a glimpse into a world that most of us never experience firsthand. The compact spaces, technical equipment, and practical design make it easy to imagine what daily life might have been like for the crew. It’s an immersive way to learn about naval history and technology while adding something a little different to an otherwise nature-focused itinerary.
For families, history enthusiasts, or anyone curious about the ocean, a submarine visit can be a worthwhile stop. It also provides a nice balance to a trip filled with scenic drives and outdoor activities.

Taking a Boat Tour Around Percé Rock
No trip to the Gaspé Peninsula would be complete without visiting Percé, a picturesque seaside town famous for its enormous limestone rock rising from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Percé Rock is one of Quebec’s most recognizable natural landmarks, and seeing it from the shore is impressive. Seeing it from the water, however, takes the experience to another level.
We headed out on a boat tour around Percé Rock, giving us a completely different perspective of this remarkable formation. From the water, you can appreciate its sheer scale, distinctive arch, and rugged cliffs. The surrounding coastline is equally beautiful, with seabirds circling overhead and waves rolling against the rock.
A boat tour is also an excellent way to appreciate the area's rich marine environment. Depending on the conditions and tour, you may spot seabirds and other wildlife along the way. The combination of fresh ocean air, incredible scenery, and the feeling of being surrounded by open water makes this one of the most memorable experiences on the peninsula.
Bring your camera, dress for the wind, and check tour schedules ahead of time, particularly if you're travelling outside the peak summer season. If you're deciding between viewing Percé Rock from land or sea, try to do both. Each offers a unique perspective, and together they make the visit feel complete.

In Conclusion:
Why the Gaspé Peninsula Belongs on Your Road Trip List
What makes a road trip around the Gaspé Peninsula so special is the variety of experiences packed into one destination. You can spend the morning driving along a spectacular coastline, the afternoon exploring a fascinating piece of maritime history, and the evening relaxing at a campsite surrounded by nature.
Camping at Les Perchoirs du Cirque added an outdoor element to the journey, the submarine visit offered something unexpected, and the boat tour around Percé Rock delivered the kind of scenery that stays with you long after the trip ends.
The peninsula is also a reminder that you don't need to fill every moment with activities. Leave room for detours, unplanned stops, and leisurely meals in coastal towns. Some of the most memorable moments happen when you take the scenic route and let the day unfold naturally.
If you're planning a Quebec road trip and love ocean views, outdoor adventures, and destinations with character, put the Gaspé Peninsula on your list. Give yourself enough time to explore without rushing, plan your major stops in advance, and leave a little flexibility for the unexpected.
